As a teenager Roy grew up with the sounds of all the artists represented on this disk, and he still includes many of the songs in his current repertoire.įor many, the quintessence of Soul is to be found in the small but astonishing output generated by the tiny, purist label, Star (and its parent company Atlantic), and its collective of house musicians and producers: Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Hayes & Porter, Eddie Floyd, and others. As the teen market flourished, records became focused on the young and lost much of their earlier jazz content. The fourth is devoted exclusively to the development of sounds that combined the above with Rock'n'Roll and Gospel.Īmong the first stars of Soul and R&B were Ray Charles, Louis Jordan, Joe Turner, Bill Doggett, Ruth Brown, Etta James and BE King. In the third, Roy included styles that were based on the combo sound of artists who fused jazz with Blues, R&B or Latin.
